The Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club (PVMAC) operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of R/C model airplane flying. The club is composed of approximately 445 members and currently enjoys two flying fields.

The club has a field in Prado Park in Chino, California, and a second field at the old Norton AFB in San Bernardino, California. The Prado field is approximately '800’ x  50’ with enough asphalt pit area to support 30 canopies. The Norton field is 490' x 50' and can support about 15 members in the pit areas at a time. Both fields are operated under the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) guidelines.

Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club

Wrap-up: 8th Annual Model Airplane News Expo

I stopped by the RCX show last weekend, and had a visit with the folks at our PVMAC booth.  They had a full staff of volunteers speading the good word about our club.  I Also had the opportunity to chat with Michael Brown who is the current Interim Vice President of AMA District X and is running for the vacant position in a special election coming soon. You can read more his campaign here.  We had an interesting discussion about what hes trying to do to get more information out to AMA members of various clubs via the district 10 website and newsletter.  I hope you also had an opportunity to view the display The Scale Squadron of Southern California setup for the Battle of the Builders Static Scale Contest.  There were some amazingly detaild models, and I really don't know how any of these guys fly these works of art. They must have nerves of steel. Thomas Marcure, One of the volunteers over the weekend had this to say:

"It was a busy show on Saturday, but pretty slow on Sunday. We shared the booth with Mark Smith AMA Executive VP and Mike Brown District X interim VP. Charlie brought in his Super Stearman with Super Girl and it was a big hit. It brought a lot of people to the booth, as did the ever popular candy bowls."
Tom also said that they were able to sign up 1 new member and renew one.
Thanks to the following for donating your time last weekend;  Charlie Mitchel, Tom Marcure,New York Jerry, Stanley Wagner, Manuel Rodriguez, Sean and Matt, Jim Stout, Chuck Pozanac, Bill Johnson.

Prado Field Gets A New Rules Board

The Prado field rules board has been removed from the frequency area, and has been edited, reprinted, and mounted next to the diplay cases on the container.   In addition the frequency board has been reduced in overall size while and has and is now removable so that we can relocate it when we have special events.  This is in a effort allow for better visibility of the runway from the pits area.  All pilots should make sure to read the rules again to familiarize yourself with the the field rules.  These rules are here to make the club a safe  place to fly at. Click on the images below to see larger versions of them, and you can even read the rules.

New World Record for Fastest RC Jet!

World Record ImageOn January 26, 2010, Guinness World Records awarded Axel Hache of the Dominican Republic and David Shulman of the USA the new world record for fastest remote controlled jet powered model aircraft when they piloted their turbine powered rc plane to an average of 337.18 MPH.  The jet was flown at the Hobbyland airfield in the Dominican Republic on January 17, 2010, and achieved a maximum speed of 345.23 MPH down wind.  The record breaking plane is a JMP Firebird equipped with an AMT Olympus HP turbine engine generating over 50Lbs of thrust.

Now for the bad news.  AMA rules (link to rules) stipulate that turbine powered aircraft shall not exceed 200 MPH and turbine engines shall not exceed 45lbs of static thrust. Also the PVMAC strictly prohibits the use of turbine powered aircraft at our fields.  So unfortunately, I don't think we will be seeing any record breaking attempts at our local fields.  Congratulations though to Axel and David though for their accomplishment.  Check out the video below, it's unreal and the plane is way too fast for my thumbs.

Combat Events in March, 2010

West Coast Combat is pleased to announce two upcoming local combat events.
On Saturday March, 6th, Coachella Valley RC Flyers located near Palm Springs will be hosting their first combat contest with the West Coast Combat Club, Air Combat Alpha.   There will be 4-rounds of ssc & open b combat with prizes for 1st through 3rd in each. Entry fee is $20 per class but spectating is free.  There will be a raffle and lunch will be available for a fee.  Visit rccombat.com, Download the Flier here, or check out the signup page here

Then, on Saturday March 13th, West Coast Combat will be hosting another combat plane Build-a-Thon in Murrieta, CA at the French Valley Airport.  They will be building a SSC or Open B Class Palomar Mig-3.  The cost is only $40, but you get  a Laser cut kit with coroplast construcion with all the hardware including motor mount, fuel tank and spinner.   They will also supply some tools tables, and basic supplies as well as help and advise.  Not a bad deal for $40, but you must RSVP as kits are limited and spaces go fast.  This is a good opportunity for anyone interested in getting into combat to get a good airplane at a cheap price and get the help needed to build it.  Download the Flier for RSVP info, and If you've not been to one of these build-a-thons, check out this video from their last event.
