SEARCH PVMAC

The Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club (PVMAC) is an RC model Aircraft Flying Club that operates as a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement and enjoyment of R/C model airplane flying. The club is composed of over 250 members.

Our club's flying field is located at the Prado AirPark in Chino, California within the Prado Regional Park Area Near Chino California. Our well-maintained runway is approximately '800’ x  50’ with enough asphalt pit area to support 30 canopies and features unobstructed flying in all directions. You must either be a PVMAC member or be an AMA member with an FAA license and obtained a $20 day pass at the Prado field to fly there. Due to FAA regulations, A 400' flying ceiling is strictly enforced and a fire extinguisher is required.

10 Questions with Stanley E. Wagner

new_stickerAs one of the largest RC flying clubs in the West, with over 450 members strong, its difficult to know everyone.  In an attempt to bring the club closer together, we're introducing a new feature on the website called "10 Questions".  Every so often (no promises on the frequency) we will feature one of our friendly club members who has some knowledge to share.  The questions will always be the same, and there are no rules on how to answer them, so the featured pilot can be as  brief or lengthly as he/she likes.

This week, we feature Stanly Wagner, who is a frequent flyer at the Prado Airpark.  Stan is always willing to lend a helping hand, so I thought who better  than with Stan to kick off this new feature.

Tell us a little about yourself.
I'm 63yrs old. I've been married for 42 years. I have 5 children and 10 grandchildren. I was born in California and have lived here all of my life. I have been involved in Drag racing since 1964. My other favorite hobby is model "N" guage trains.
How long have you been flying model airplanes?
On and off for over 50yrs.
What was the first airplane you flew and how did it go?
The first model airpalne I was a control line profile plane powered by a .09 size engine.
What is/are your most favorite aspect about being involved in this hobby?
Helping others with the hobby and introducing new people to the hobby. I also enjoy modifying and flying odd types of planes(pizza, surfer, witch on broom)
Tell me about the airplane you enjoy flying most today?
My favorite type of plane is float or seaplane. My favorite plane is the Canadair CL415 superscooper twin engine seaplane.
What's the best memory you have since being involed in this hobby?
Having a friend of mine get me back into the hobby. I was out of the hobby for over 20yrs. A friend convinced me to go float flying with him at a local lake. He flew his plane for awhile then landed. We watched others fly their planes then he took off with his plane, flew it around the pattern then put the transmitter in my chest and said to fly it and walked away. I flew it then landed it and the rest was history. I was hooked and now own over 40 planes.
What is the biggest mistake you've made (in the Hobby), and what did you learn from it?
Trying to fly a autogyro. Not to impluse buy just because you think you have to have something different.
What are you working on now?
A new CL415, with a tank in it to pick up and drop water in flight.
If you could fly in any real airplane, what would it be and why?
Probably a Stearman, I have flown in open cockpit planes before and there is nothing like that felling.
How many different airplanes do you think you've owned since you started?
100,s

PVMAC Is An AMA Gold Leader Club!

PVMAC Gold Leader Club AwardThe PVMAC has been accepted as an "AMA Gold Leader Club".  This is great news and very important to your clubs status amongst other clubs and this also means a lot to our local community and to the San Bernardino County Parks Department. Please extend a special “Thank You” to club members Tom Marcure, Greg Stockdale, Steve Parola, Kyle Goodwine, Joni Whitsitt, Sam Wright and others in helping get this accomplished.

In order to recognize the leadership of the best model clubs, the Academy has established the AMA Leader Club Awards. These awards can be earned by any AMA chartered club, by meeting certain standards of community service and activity.
There are three levels of AMA Leader Clubs: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Once a club meets the minimum criteria, it qualifies for different levels based on performance.
AMA has established 6 goals (one goal can be waived) and nine electives to obtain Leader Club status. The ultimate recognition, the Gold level, requires that all goals be met and Each goal must be documented.

 Congratulations PVMAC!

Big Jolt 2010 Wrap-up...

sam_wrightbig_joltlogoSmallThe West Coast Big Jolt started mid-afternoon Thursday when the big rig RVs started rolling in. Vendors and pilots staged their spots in the overnight camping area and vendors set up their booths in the assigned spaces. All went smoothly and registration opened bright and early at 7:30 a.m. Friday morning. By mid-day, 14 vendors had staged their booths in the horse shoe shaped vendor area facing the flight line.

Pilots who arrived early grabbed the neat asphalt pits with imbedded tie downs for their canopies. The pit area had been extended into graded soil and fortunately accommodated all 85 pilots and 156 aircraft. Open flying Friday opened at 8:30am with sessions blocked out for 3D and helicopters. The helicopter count was low and may be excluded next year to allocate more time to open flying. Aerobatic aircraft flew in the open session but were not able to hover block the race track pattern. This worked out well and during their specific 3D window, they could hover and do all the other cool maneuvers that they demonstrate.

Friday night ended with a successful pilot mixer with Buffalo wings, Johnson Brats, and French fries made in the hangar. About 60 pilots, wives, crews and significant others enjoyed the aviation atmosphere in the hangar at the Chino airport. Our host were Sam Wright, Gordon Truax, and Ken Wagner. Ken or Wag’s owns the beautiful P-51 lady Alice.

Saturday went off on time with the national anthem and the same schedule spotlighted by the noon airshow featuring an EDF Jet speed run with speeds over 225 mph recorded. That awesome demonstration was followed by the PR-1 Pogo pylon racer from horizon. This is a new electric spec class in the NMPRA. These little hot rods screamed around two pylons 400’apart at 95 to 115 mph.

Saturday evening was again in the hangar only with sit down tables and table cloths for a great BBQ Beef, Pork, and Chicken dinner, with baked beans, salads and rolls. Of course the soft drinks and cold beer flowed throughout the evening. The evening was topped off with a super auction and the top item was a ride in the lady Alice P-51.

Sunday started early, and a nice touch was some soft Christian music followed by the national anthem and open flying. Around 2:30 we pulled raffle items and awarded the pilots the awards. The awards were based on the type of the aircraft and popularity.

John Reed from Model Airplane News did on line videos and interviews and posted them the next day on line with some great footage of the event. (Click Here To View)

Model Airplane News, ZAP Adhesives, Hobby People and Horizon were major sponsors and really supported the event and the growth of the electric flight aspects of this great hobby. The weather cooperated with 7 to the mid 80s with plenty of sun. Soft breezes came up around 2:30 but were right down the runway as always.

A few things we tried that were very successful was the addition of the halontronic-1 Halonfire extinguishers on the flight line and our newly constructed AC and DC charging station with Lipo sacks provided by Xtreme power Systems. We also had a 5 gallon salt waterbucket that claimed about 6 battery packs for the entire 3 day event.

Over all the pilots seemed to understand the care of Lipo batteries and all flew well with only two minor mid airs between some foam aircraft.

We learned a lot this year and Phil Goodwine, myself the CD, and the rest of the Big Jolt crew in those green vests will fine tune the event for 2011. Next year we anticipate over 100 plus pilots and will have a refined form of online registration and that also will qualify for an assigned pit number on a first come first serve basis. On behalf of the president and entire membership of the Pomona Valley Model Airplane Club, offers a special thank you and gratitude is extended to all the pilots and vendors that supported our first year effort for a West Coast Electric RC Experience.

Lastly, a hats off to the tremendous support of all of our sponsors who provided products and event sponsorship. Without your support, this event would not be possible.

Thank you,

Sam Wright, Big Jolt Contest Director

New Photos from the Jerry Ortego Memorial Scale Fly In

ww1_airplane_2010Pictures from the Jerry Ortego Memorial Scale Fly In that took place back on June 5th and 6th have finally been posted.  These fantastic photos are courtesy of our clubs very own Marty Nelson, whom you will often see at just about every club event with his trusty camera in hand.  There are over 300 pics to browse through for this event.  Thanks again Marty for sharing these fantastic photos.  Click on the link here, which will take you to our photo gallery, and find the Jerry Ortego Album.

2010 3D Deflection and Freestyle Event: Wrap Up

The first event of the season is behind us, and it was a great success, setting the pace for the rest of the year. There were about 25 die hard pilots taking Friday off to come out and fly. Saturdays turnout was even stronger with 41 pilots.  Although it was windy at times, this did not stop any of the seasoned pilots from showing their right stuff.  The  event was incedent free, with only a couple of deadsticks.  Many photos from the event are up in the gallery, and many more are rolling in, so check back often. Speaking of Rolling in,  it seems that the most popular maneuver out there was the rolling harrier, and almost all the polots were able and willing to demonstrate their proficiecy in this maneuver....in 12-15mph wind.

Thanks to the sponsors, Ace Hobbies, DW Foamies, Desert Aircraft, Air Wild, Hobbie Club USA, E-Power, and 3-D Hobby Shop for making this event possible. The 35% Yak courtesy of Thunder Tiger/ACE went to Ground Pounder Bill. The 29% Edge 540 courtesy of Airwild Hobbies went to 10 year old Robbie and the DA-50R went to Jason Benson. Also, a huge thanks goes out to volunteers for making sure this event was pulled off without a glitch.

We're also in the process of tracking down the complete list of plaque winners, so check back here soon for the results.

Check out the Photo Gallery here, (you'll need to click on the 3D Full Deflection and Freestyle 2010 gallery)
Also, here is a Video of the event, Friday only though....

New List Aerobatic Maneuvers...

skipstewartSo who is excited about the 3-D Full deflection and Free Style Event that is happening at our Prado Field on May 21st and 22nd?  Well I am for one, and since I've never been to one of these events, I thought I'd bone up on some of the maneuvers that I might be seeing at the event.  I began compile a small list of maneuvers and the descriptions, thinking that maybe others might be intereted as well.  Anyhow, I kind of got carried away and created a monster of a list with over 60 maneuvers with descriptions and youtube videos back them up.  Now I doubt that we will see all 60 of these, but I know I learned a lot about the creative maneuvers that pilots are doing these days, and am hoping to get out to the field and try some of them. Second thought I'd better hit the Simulator first.

Enjoy the list Here.

RC Hobby Hauler

Club member Victor Noiron, with his company RC Hobby Hauler Trailer Manufacturing, has gotten in the business of producing quality RC ailrplane trailers.  I've seen this trailer first hand and it looks like a fantastic setup.  Some of the standard features include a battery with 110v and 12v outlets for charging and other needs, a place to store a generator, rear work bench area with storage, 2 levels of airplane storage with adjustable shelving, and lighting through-out. He even offers an option for custom graphics. So if you have a few large aircraft, and want to take them to the field without removing the wings, this may be the trailer for you.  Check out the posted video and call Victor with RC with any questions at 626-422-7110.

Mission Accomplished! Cleanup Successful.

I want to “THANK” these 32 individuals
that volunteered their time to clean up
your Prado Airfield, on Saturday 4/3/10.
